Today most companies depend on IT to support their businesses processes and enable business initiatives. As the need for flexibility and the ability to do more with less increase, business processes and organisations are becoming increasingly complex and are changing more frequently. Only 1 of 3 IT initiatives put in place to support these changes are judged to be positive in terms of value creation, cost effectiveness, tangible financial impact and attainment of goals. Almost 50 percent of them are not completed on time and within budget. Frequently the IT solution is found to be complex and expensive.

The main reason for this is that solutions have not been aligned with the business needs and priorities, which should always drive IT investment. We have seen many change programs being initiated and led from an IT perspective. We believe that this is not the right approach. IT tools are an enabler for efficient business processes and reporting. They can also enable harmonisation and standardisation initiatives.

It is important that the business structure and processes are simplified, checked for efficiency and effectiveness and harmonised as much as possible before a new IT initiative is taken: "IT can automate, but not simplify"
