The food industry consists of three main sectors. The beverages sector comprises companies producing and distributing drinks ranging from spirits to beer and soft drinks. Recent international consolidations in the beer sub-sector have reduced this market to a small number of global players. The food sector comprises companies producing dairy products, frozen food, fast food, baby foods, confectionary etc. The consumption sector covers companies dealing with tobacco, cosmetics, home and personal care, possibly together with food.
Globalisation is one challenge facing all of them. Another is increasing retail price pressure resulting from price wars among major retail chains.
